Currently, there are three main opportunities through which you can volunteer with the Elder Program:
Tutoring
In-class tutors work under the direction of the lead teacher to facilitate small group discussion and one-on-one time with refugee elders. Volunteers typically choose one of the five classes and develop a relationship with the teacher and the elders in the class.
Time Commitment: A minimum of one class (2 hours) each week.
Mentoring
Mentors meet with their elder outside of class- usually at the elder's home- to provide supplemental instruction, as well as to participate in community activities. Elder Program teachers communicate specific struggles and achievements of the elder so the mentor can focus on what the elder needs most.
Time Commitment: A minimum of one hour a week for six months.
Internships
We are happy to work with students to provide internship opportunities and practicum placements. Please contact Eva Nyerges at enyerges@kyrm.org if you are interested in completing a placement with the Elder Program.
We are always open to new ideas and opportunities to involve volunteers and the larger community! Please do not hesitate to contact the Elder Program Coordinator about this.
